About

In July 2025, a national convention will launch a dialogue aimed at reimagining South Africa’s future. Over five months, delegates from various sectors will participate in local discussions. The event will be coordinated by a collective of national foundations, including the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, and Steve Biko Foundation. The idea is to produce a binding national compact to guide government policy, legislation, and constitutional reform.

You can read more about it here.

This is a project of Prof Waldo Krugell. As an academic economist, I am interested in people’s economic policy preferences and this is an opportune time to launch a project.

Most of us agree about the economic challenges facing South Africa – unemployment, poverty and inequality. The solution is faster economic growth, but there is little agreement about how to achieve it. Our resources are scarce, so choices and sacrifices will have to be made.

I want to use this page to share the news and views about this dialogue and to allow anyone who is interested to express their views.
